ColorAlerts — Computer Vision for Truck Drivers

ColorAlerts is an end-to-end computer-vision application I developed to help truck drivers monitor a loading dock status without constantly watching the dock’s indicator light.

The project began as a Raspberry Pi–based computer-vision system using a camera and OpenCV to continuously monitor and classify the color of a loading dock’s status light(s). The system detects changes in the light and identifies the state indicating that loading or unloading is complete—typically represented by a specific color such as green or red. When the target state is detected, the system automatically triggers a custom alarm to alert the driver, allowing them to rest or step away from the loading area without having to continuously monitor the dock.

After validating the hardware and computer-vision prototype, I expanded the project into a React Native/TypeScript mobile application, developing the software necessary to turn the original prototype into a complete user-facing product.

I currently maintain and develop ColorAlerts as a published application on the Apple App Store, and releasing soon to the Google Play Store. The application is available as a free download:

Development & Technical Experience

  • Real-time image processing and computer vision using OpenCV
  • Raspberry Pi and camera hardware integration
  • Automated loading-dock status detection and alerting
  • React Native / Typescript mobile application development
  • Hardware and software integration and testing
  • End-to-end product development and refinement
  • Application deployment and App Store publishing
  • Ongoing maintenance and development of a production mobile application

ColorAlerts demonstrates my ability to identify a real-world problem, design and prototype a hardware and computer-vision solution, develop the supporting mobile software, and take the project through testing, deployment, and publication as a working software product.
